What I Treat · Hillcrest, San Diego

Classical acupuncture for chronic illness.

An investigative approach for people dealing with complex, long-term conditions who have tried the normal options, and still don't feel normal.

A body that will not settle.

You have been at this for years. Specialists, then more specialists. Tests that come back clean and tests that name something with no clear way out: lupus, Hashimoto's, Crohn's, fibromyalgia, Lyme, MS. The medications hold the edges of it and hand you new problems in return. You have run the elimination diets, the supplements, the functional protocols. Some of it helps for a while. None of it has touched the question of why your body turned, and the daily work of managing a system that will not hold steady has worn you down in a way that is hard to explain to anyone who has not lived it.

Your body is not failing you, and it is not turning on you. It is doing something far more deliberate, and once you can see it, the whole illness reads differently.

The choice your body already made.

Almost every chronic illness is the same story told in different tissue. At some point your body met a threat it could not defeat outright: a pathogen, a trauma, a toxin. So it did the intelligent thing. It took that threat and hid it in a deeper layer, away from the organs that keep you alive, and it spent its own reserves to hold it there in a kind of cage. For years, this can work. You feel fine. The trouble is held below the surface and you go on with your life, never knowing a quiet war is being financed underneath.

What pays for that war is what the classics call the body's mediumship: the thin and thick fluids, the Blood, and the deep essence (jing), the constitutional reserve you are born with. Holding a threat in latency is expensive, and the bill never stops coming. As those reserves run dry, with age, with overwork, with grief and stress held in for too long, the body can no longer keep the line. The cage opens. The hidden thing surfaces, and it surfaces as chronic disease.

The foundational principle here is that the body does not make errors. It chose the slower, survivable illness on purpose, over a faster and fatal one. The eczema instead of the organ failure. The autoimmune flare instead of the unchecked invasion. Read that way, the symptom is not a malfunction. It is a strategy, and a successful one. This is also why forcing a symptom shut, with suppression alone, so often drives the trouble deeper. You are not removing the threat. You are taking away the cage and asking the body to find somewhere worse to put it.

Where this illness actually lives.

Classical Chinese medicine works across five channel systems, and chronic illness does not live on the surface ones. It lives in the deep systems built precisely for this problem, the systems standard care never goes looking for because it does not hold a map of them. The work is never to silence the alarm. It is twofold, and slow, and specific.

This is the part of the medicine most people never see. It takes years to learn and longer to practice well, and it is the reason a classical treatment can hold its ground in conditions that surface care can only manage. It is the same deep channel work that underlies how this medicine approaches autoimmune disease, where a pathology the body could not expel has settled in to stay.

The conditions this work reaches.

This is complementary support, alongside your medical care. Within that frame, the pattern underneath these conditions is one the deep channel systems are built to address.

How the work actually goes.

  1. The diagnosis reads the pattern, not the label. I do not treat your diagnosis. Two people carrying the same one will present nothing alike. Classical pulse and tongue reading shows which system is holding the pathology, which reserve has run thin, and how much your body can safely process on a given day.
  2. One person at a time. I do not run between rooms or treat several people at once. The appointment is yours, start to finish.
  3. The pace is set by your reserves, not a calendar. For many people the first stretch of work is rebuilding, before the body is strong enough to release anything. Push a depleted system to let go too soon and it only grips harder. What happens in the other twenty-three hours of the day, the food, the rest, the load you carry, matters as much as the time on the table.
"Acupuncture, herbal supplements and moxa treatments with Diego have been extremely effective; the discomfort and limitations from my arthritis have substantially subsided. Treating the root cause has shown me a much healthier, more balanced outcome than treating the symptom." — Debra L.

Is this right for you?

A good fit if:

Not the right fit if:

You do not need it all figured out to begin. Start with a consultation, and we will look together at whether this is the right medicine for what you are carrying. The door here stays open: even when a condition has been called permanent, there is usually something the body is still asking for, and a way to begin giving it back.

I've had this condition for years. Can acupuncture really help at this point?

Often there is more to work with than you would think. A chronic illness builds over years, which means there is a pattern with a history, not a body that broke at random. The work is to draw out what the body has been holding and rebuild the reserves it spent doing so. This is complementary support alongside your medical care, and what is possible varies by condition and by person.

My doctor says my condition is incurable. Why would acupuncture be different?

I make no cure or remission claims, and this works alongside your medical care. What classical medicine works on is the underlying pattern that lets a condition persist: the threat the body has hidden, and the reserves it has spent holding it there. Some people report improved quality of life and a lighter symptom burden. Results vary significantly by condition and individual.

How is this different from regular acupuncture I've tried before?

Most acupuncture in the U.S. works from standardized point protocols on the Primary Channels, the everyday surface system. Chronic degenerative and autoimmune conditions live deeper, in the Divergent and Eight Extraordinary channels, the systems built to draw out what the body has put into latency and rebuild the reserves it depleted. That deeper layer is usually what holds when surface treatment keeps fading.

Will I need to stop my medications?

No. Continue everything as prescribed unless your physician advises otherwise. This work sits alongside your medical care and coordinates with it.
