What I Treat · Hillcrest, San Diego

Classical acupuncture for Long COVID & post-viral recovery.

You "recovered" from the acute illness. But not all of you has come back. Classical medicine understands and is uniquely suited for this type of condition.

Gateway Acupuncture does not claim to treat, cure, or prevent COVID-19 or Long COVID. The frameworks described here are Classical Chinese Medicine concepts applied to support general recovery and wellbeing in people experiencing ongoing symptoms following viral illness.

You're better, but you're not well.

The acute phase is behind you. But weeks or months later, you're still not yourself. The fatigue is relentless: bone-deep depletion that doesn't respond to rest. The brain fog turns simple tasks into effort. Exercise triggers a crash that lasts days. You've lost the ability to function at a normal level.

You've been told it should resolve on its own, that your tests are normal. But your experience tells you something is off. And you're right. What's happening in your body has a name in classical acupuncture, a mechanism understood for thousands of years, and a treatment approach that supports genuine recovery at multiple levels.

What classical medicine sees.

The acute infection was a battle your body won, but battles have costs. Resources were consumed fighting the pathogen. The mechanisms your body used to suppress and contain the virus left residue. The system that did the fighting is now depleted and dysregulated. Classical medicine has several overlapping frameworks for exactly this presentation:

How I work differently.

  1. Identify what was depleted and what remains latent. Pulse diagnosis reveals the state of your Qi, Blood, Yin, and Jing after the illness, and whether latent pathology is being held in deeper channel systems. This determines whether to prioritize rebuilding resources, clearing residue, or both.
  2. Use Divergent Channels for latent pathology. These are the channel systems designed specifically for chronic, post-infectious states. Treatment is carefully paced to avoid overwhelming a system that's already depleted.
  3. Restore Wei Qi and Lung channel function. Reestablishing the defensive surface layer may support the body's recovery process following viral illness, including effort tolerance, and resilience.
  4. One patient at a time. A private room, my undivided attention for the entire session.

How many sessions will I need?

Many people feel some early lift. The deeper repair, rebuilding what a serious illness drained from your reserves (what classical medicine calls Jing and Yin), is gradual constitutional work the body does in its own time. We don't promise it by a certain number of visits; we meet each session where you are and rebuild steadily. Recovery looks different for everyone.

Is this approach safe given immune dysregulation?

Yes. Classical acupuncture for post-viral states is designed to support the body's own clearing mechanisms rather than forcing a response. Treatment is carefully paced (particularly with Divergent Channel work) to avoid overwhelming a depleted system. We move at your body's pace.

What if I relapse during treatment?

Temporary worsening occasionally occurs when the body begins mobilizing latent pathology. This is typically brief and followed by improvement. I'll track these patterns carefully and adjust treatment accordingly. If something feels wrong, contact me.

Does this apply to other post-viral syndromes like Epstein-Barr or chronic Lyme?

The Classical framework for post-viral and post-infectious illness applies across different pathogens. The mechanisms (Wei Qi disruption, latent pathology, resource depletion) are recognizable regardless of which virus or organism initiated the process.
