What I Treat · Hillcrest, San Diego

Classical acupuncture for performance & executive health.

For the founders, executives, creatives, and athletes running on empty: wired, driven, and starting to break down. Classical medicine reads the depletion underneath the drive and works to rebuild it at the root.

You are still delivering. It just costs everything you have.

You are the one who gets it done. You set the bar, you carry the load, and you have built a life on being able to push through. Lately the push costs more. The mind is still racing at midnight, but the body has gone quiet on you. Caffeine gets you upright, sugar gets you through the afternoon, and the edge you used to run on now takes a real effort to find. The crash comes harder. The drive that defined you flickers. You cannot switch off, and yet you cannot quite switch on either. Your labs come back clean and you are told you are fine.

None of that means you are weak, or that you have simply lost a step. In classical medicine, burnout has a discernible logic. It is the body forcing a shutdown to stop you from spending what is no longer there, and a body protecting itself that way can be read and helped back toward order.

What burnout actually is.

In classical terms, this is a dangerous over-drafting of your vital resources. The mind keeps commanding the body to produce energy, the active Yang that powers thought and drive, long after the physical fuel that feeds it has run dry. That fuel is Yin: the cooling fluids, the Blood, the deep reserves that the Yang draws on to do its work. High performers live on credit. You spend your thin fluids and your Blood to finance the push, then start burning the deepest endocrine reserves just to stay awake and sharp. Four things tend to be happening at once.

Underneath all of it is your physical bank account: the fluids, the Blood, and the Jing, the deep essence the body holds as its final reserve. Burnout is what happens when the account is overdrawn and the body calls the loan. The crushing fatigue, the brain fog, the apathy, the flat indifference toward things you used to care about: that is the shutdown, and it is doing its job. You cannot push through it with more caffeine, because there is no currency left to push with. The way back is not more force. It is stepping out of the competitive drive long enough to rebuild what you have been spending.

Why classical acupuncture reaches what other care has not.

Most approaches work the surface: manage the stress, optimize the sleep, prop up the output for a while. Classical Chinese medicine treats through channel systems that map the body at a depth standard care does not go looking for. For a system running this far into its reserves, a few of them matter.

This is the part of the medicine most people never see. It takes years to learn and longer to practice well, and it is the reason a classical treatment can rebuild ground where stimulants and optimization keep sliding back. The same deep reserve work underlies how this medicine approaches fatigue and insomnia, where the body has withdrawn from the world and the reserves have to be rebuilt before energy can return.

For the people who build things.

For CEOs, creatives, and athletes, the cost of burnout is rarely just energy. It is the loss of the thing that drove you in the first place: the sense of purpose, the inspiration, the reason the work mattered. Classically, that vertical line of communication between the deep will of the Kidneys and the spirit of the Heart is what carries purpose through a life, and burnout is where it goes quiet. Part of the work restores that connection, so engagement returns as something real rather than something you perform. Where the burden sits specifically around career, finances, or creativity, the deeper alchemy of the Nine Heart Pains can address the particular weight the heart has taken on in those arenas.

The other half of the work is rebuilding the reserves.

For a system this depleted, recovery asks for more than needles. The aim is to stop draining an account that is already overdrawn and start refilling it: aggressive rest the body can actually use, real hydration to rebuild the thin fluids, and warm, nourishing, easy-to-break-down food in place of the sugar and caffeine you have been running on. This works alongside your training, your schedule, and your medical team. We find what fits the life you are unwilling to give up, and the changes you are willing to make shape the pace as much as the treatment does.

"Before meeting Diego, I felt overwhelmed, disorganized, and forgetful. Since working with him I'm more energized and inspired, procrastinating less, getting back on track at work and building healthier, more productive habits at home." — Erin M.

You do not need to step away from your life to begin. Start with a consultation, and we will find out together whether this is the right medicine for where you are running. If it is not, I will help you find where to look next.

How is this different from just managing stress?

Stress management works on the demands and your response to them. Classical acupuncture rebuilds the physical reserves underneath, the fluids, the Blood, and the deep essence that the drive has been spending. Both have a place, and they work together. The difference is that you cannot think your way back into reserves that are physically gone.

Can't I just push through, or fix this with more caffeine?

Burnout is the body forcing a shutdown to stop you spending what is no longer there. Caffeine borrows against an account that is already overdrawn, which is why the returns keep shrinking and the crash gets worse. The work is to refill the account, not to draft against it harder.

How long does it take to see results?

Sleep and energy usually lift first, with mental sharpness following. Rebuilding the deep reserves underneath, what classical medicine calls Jing, is gradual by nature and rewards consistency. We do not keep a fixed schedule; each visit we read where your reserves are and build from there.

Can I keep my demanding schedule?

The work is built to support the life you are unwilling to give up, and for most people the schedule stays. The honest part is this: if you are burning reserves faster than we can rebuild them, we will name it and find what has to shift. This sits alongside your training and your medical care and coordinates with it.
